WTF? The Internet Lies!

This has to be one of the most bizarre things I’ve come across in a very very long time. I was bored and Googling myself tonight (that sounds bad) and found this:

“I really had no professional video experience. Well, no actual paid video experience,” begins Matt Luschek of Third Story Video in Litchfield, Ohio. Luschek describes his early days of videography as the classic Catch 22. “Nobody would hire me without prior experience, and how could I obtain experience if nobody would hire me?” With that paradox in mind, Luschek embarked on his first professional piece: an instructional tape on gun cleaning. “I realized I would never get a legit job unless I created one on my own. So I thought about the types of productions I could pull off, and an instructional tape fit the bill. It would require limited actors, limited sets, limited production value and, most importantly, a limited budget.”

I’m assuming this story is talking about me. However, I’m “Mat,” but there’s no other Matt Luschek in Litchfied OH. The story goes on to say how I’m a gun enthusiast and filmed myself doing an instructional video on how to clean a gun!

“I would set up the shot, trigger my camcorder, then move to my mark and demonstrate the various steps involved in cleaning a variety of firearms.” Since most of the instruction involved in such a process consisted of tight shots, only Luschek’s hands were visible in the majority of the video. “I did a small on-camera introduction in which I discussed the importance of gun safety, and that was shot in the same manner as everything else. I pre-lit the set with the help of a monitor wired to the video output of my camcorder. I swung the monitor around so I could see myself on camera and kept readjusting the framing until I got a correct headshot. It was hard at first, but after several attempts, I got used to it.”

What the hell?? I never did any of this, nor did I give this interview! The weird thing is, I know the guy who wrote it. I worked with him on the film PIG. Mark Bosko. This was written for VideoMaker.com in 1997. How weird.

    Hi Mat,

We’re going to take a look into this. No one is here from 1997, but we’ll try to follow up with the author.

We take things like this very seriously, even 10 year old articles need to be accurate.

I’ll let you know what we find out.

    (nice site BTW :) )

I am the author of that piece. Since Mat says he was not the gun-lover, and I got to know him during the filming of an independent film called Pig, my only guess is that someone else from the crew was the person quoted. Matt (not Mat) my sincere apologies. That brand new DVD special edition copy of the film, and a copy of my book, are headed your way! And, apologies to Videomaker for the inaccuracy. I have called the camera and sound man from the team, as well as two of the sound post folks (still trying to locate the editor) and am awaiting input to see who the gun cleaning video producer was, and will post here when I find the facts. Sorry all.
