Weekend at the Great Sand Dunes - 09.08.06

We decided to head to the Great Sand Dunes Friday afternoon. I’d already called off sick due to lack of sleep the night before and after grabbing a few more hours of  sleep, figured what the hell, lets leave today. “Great idea!” we thought. We’d get there around dusk, set up camp and still have time for some beer and a fire. WRONG! We followed some bunk Google directions into the woods for about six miles, when we finally decided the “road” wasn’t getting better. See, this “road” was more like a loose gravel path with lots of rocks and streams running through it. Any false move would have threatened to toss your car over into a steep ravine. Perfect place for me to be driving the rented Taurus with no insurance. Finally we got back on course, after wasting three hours, and arrived at the camp site around midnight. Tired and beaten, we set up camp and hit the hay.

The next morning we were up early, ate some breakfast, and hit the trail. The Trail to the Dunes!

It was a perfect day for climbing around in the sand. When the sun was out, it was warm, but not hot, and when the clouds passed it was nice and cool, but not cold.

Aileen, John and Sarah brought their snowboards, and we all had fun doing some sandboarding. Even me. And I only got hurt a little.

We took a break on top the Dunes and relaxed for a bit. Looking around its amazing how huge these piles of sand really are.

We all got tired and headed back to camp, where we ate dinner (steaks and burgers) and drank beer.

Sunday morning we had breakfast the campground restaurant, and went our ways…
..but not before Bj, Aillen and I decided to check out the Alligator Farm.

I think we all had a great time this weekend. I’d like to spend a few more days exploring the area sometime. I’m sure we’ll be back.
